Nothing

I need to learn to do nothing.

The hard part is that it becomes another thing to schedule or check off your to do list.

I have always equated being busy with being productive.

That’s certainly not true if you are getting the wrong things done.

I also equate doing nothing with being lazy.

Like anything else it is about balance.

There is a time for doing and a time for being. We are human beings not human doings.

When life is uncertain we want to keep moving.

Movement feels like progress, even comforting, but the progress may be in the wrong direction.

“When you find yourself in a hole. Stop digging.” – Denis Healey

That’s easier said than done.

Often doing something feels better than doing nothing, even if that something is making things worse.

Breathe. Be present. Calm.

If you just do the next right thing, even if that is nothing, it will get better.

You Can’t Have Everything

“Everything you’re trying to reach – by taking the long way – you could have right now, this moment. If you’d only stop thwarting your own attempts. If you’d only let go of the past, entrust the future to Providence, and guide the present toward reverence and justice.” – Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book 12.1

Be present. It is the only thing we own.

If you live this moment to its fullest, you won’t have any regrets.

If you do the right thing in this moment, you won’t have any regrets.

The future will work out the way it’s supposed. It may not be the way you want it to.

By being present in each moment, focusing on what you can control, you will be prepared for whatever happens.

You can’t have everything you want.

If you accept what happens to you you can have everything you need.

Do the right thing. Breathe. Be present. Calm.
